Want to enjoy Poland's lakes but don't have a sailing license? Good news — in Poland you can legally operate many vessels without any qualifications. You just need to know the regulations and choose the right boat.
Current regulations
Under the Polish Inland Waterway Navigation Act (21 December 2000) and the Minister of Sport Regulation (9 April 2013), no license is required to operate:
Motorboats
- With engine up to 10 kW (13.6 HP) — no length restriction
Motor yachts (houseboats)
- Up to 13 m in length, engine up to 75 kW, provided speed is limited by design to 15 km/h
Sailboats
- With hull length up to 7.5 m (may have auxiliary engine)
Other watercraft
- Kayaks, pedal boats, tourist pontoons, SUP boards
Note: Jet skis (PWC) always require a motorboat license — regardless of engine power.
Where to sail without a license?
Masuria — the most popular choice
The Great Masurian Lakes are a paradise for beginners. In Giżycko, Mikołajki and Węgorzewo you'll find dozens of rental companies offering license-free vessels.
Recommended lakes: Niegocin (calm, many marinas), Tałty (scenic), Szymon (intimate).
Pomerania
Drawskie and Czorsztyńskie Lakes. On the Baltic Sea a motorboat skipper license is required.
Which boat to choose?
Approximate daily rates for the 2025–2026 season:

Tips for beginners
Before setting off
- Get a briefing from the rental company — every good one offers this
- Check the weather — avoid winds above 5 m/s
- Study the map and plan your route
- Check safety equipment: life jackets, fire extinguisher, first aid kit
On the water
- Keep to the right side of the channel
- Sailboats have right of way over motorboats
- Respect speed limits in marinas and canals
What to avoid
- Shallow areas without a depth chart
- Ignoring weather forecasts
- Boating under the influence of alcohol — it's illegal and carries fines
