The Great Masurian Lakes form Poland's most popular sailing region. Over 2,000 lakes connected by canals, picturesque towns and excellent tourist infrastructure attract thousands of sailors every year — both experienced and beginners taking their first steps on the water.

Why Masuria?

Masuria offers calm inland sailing without ocean waves, with the ability to moor in nearly every town. It's the perfect place for a family holiday or your first taste of sailing.

Benefits of sailing in Masuria:

  • No ocean waves — safer for beginners
  • Short distances between marinas (1–3 hours of sailing)
  • Excellent port infrastructure
  • No license required for smaller vessels
  • Affordable prices compared to sea charter

How much does a charter cost?

Where to start? Best charter bases

Giżycko

The largest charter base in Masuria. Centrally located with access to Lakes Niegocin, Mamry and beyond. The widest choice of vessels.

Mikołajki

"The Pearl of Masuria" — a charming town with many marinas. The ideal starting point for a southbound cruise: Śniardwy, Bełdany.

Węgorzewo

Gateway to the Masurian Canal and the northern part of the route. Less crowded than Giżycko or Mikołajki.

Do I need a sailing license?

Under Polish inland waterway law (Act of 21 December 2000, Regulation of 9 April 2013):

No license needed:

  • Sailboats with hull length up to 7.5 m
  • Motorboats with engine up to 10 kW (13.6 HP)
  • Motor yachts up to 13 m with speed limited by design to 15 km/h (applies to houseboats)

License required:

  • Sailboats over 7.5 m
  • Motorboats with engine over 10 kW (unless speed-limited to 15 km/h)
  • Jet skis (PWC) — always require a license
